Following the success of last year’s awards with Lush Liverpool, Portview has once again won an SBID International Design Award in the Retail Design category for its project, Samsung KX.
The SBID International Design Awards, which this year took place virtually, celebrates talent and design excellence across all corners of the globe with projects from 49 countries, including Malaysia, the United States, Switzerland, China, Spain and the United Arab Emirates. The Retail Design category covers all commercial interiors created for retail outlets including shopping centres, shops, showrooms, pop-up shops and art galleries.
Judges this year included a host of top tier professionals from global design businesses such as Burberry; Belmond; Jacobs; Walpole and Quintessentially.
Working in partnership with agencies Brinkworth, KSS, and Cheil; Portview handed over Samsung KX in September 2019, after two years of construction.
Managing Director of Portview, Simon Campbell said:
“We’re very proud to be awarded another SBID International Award for the second year running, particularly given the high calibre of finalists and projects we faced.
“To receive the award alongside our friends, Brinkworth, KSS and Chiel, is not only a testament to the quality of work that went into Samsung KX, but also to the people and partnerships that helped to make it all happen.”
“At a time when revitalisation is needed more than ever, Samsung KX is an example of how retail can be reimagined to help enrich the customer experience through unique, personalised services that connect with shoppers on a deeper level.
“We’re exceptionally proud to have managed the delivery of this iconic project and thank everyone involved in helping to make it happen.”
Located within the ‘kissing point’ of the two curved rooftops (designed by Heatherwick Studio) in the Coal Drops Yard development, Samsung KX is a showcase packed with cutting-edge innovations. The modern 20,000 sq ft space boasts a number of bespoke design features that are the first of their kind, including an architectural lighting frame embedded within the sales floor to create a curved, illuminated arc.
The showcase boasts plentiful natural light and stunning views overlooking the Coal Drops Yard with floor to ceiling glazing spanning the entire façade. Inside, the space is carefully detailed with premium finishes such as porcelain flooring, a custom engineered steel roof, solid oak furniture and aluminium mosaic tiles, to give it a distinct edge – reminiscent of a contemporary London loft.
SBID Founder and CEO, Dr Vanessa Brady OBE commented:
“We have all been struggling to cope with the broad effects caused by Covid-19 – as individuals, as well as a community. The awards this year, whilst very different, have been particularly inspiring to review. It just goes to prove the importance of our surroundings and how the way we feel and act within them is directly impacted by it. It’s been an important reminder to business owners that good design is not just about its aesthetic and functionality, but particularly in commercial space, it’s also about the intrinsic value great design adds to business.”
