Last year we were delighted to be selected by the Cateys-winning, Harts Group, to fit-out their four new restaurants – Barrafina, Casa Pastor, Plaza Pastor and The Drop – in the popular Coal Drops Yard development in Kings Cross.
From the outset, we engaged in extensive consultation with Harts Group to deliver a dynamic space, where foodies can indulge in an array culinary delights whilst sipping on their favourite cocktail and socialising with friends.
With a strong environmental ethos in tow, we diligently reclaimed and repurposed as many original features and materials as possible to showcase the Victorian architecture that gives it a rustic, industrial feel whilst being fully compliant with strict BREEAM standards.
Covering 38 with an additional 24 in the private dining room, this is the largest Barrafina yet – serving Michelin-star quality Spanish tapas within rich, sumptuous surroundings that features exposed roof trusses, a reclaimed brick beam and sash windows.
Similar to its sister restaurants, Barrafina features its signature red, leather bar stools around a marble-topped counter where guests can watch the chefs craft some of the best Spanish tapas in London. The separate private dining room is a light and bright space, with full length windows overlooking the Regent’s Canal.
The new 80-cover Mexican “big sister to Borough’s El Pastor,” is a feast for the eyes to behold. Such features include exposed Victorian brick walls and arched windows with bright Mexican murals; coloured festoon bulbs; rich ironwork ceiling, antique patterned tiles; and a beautifully bold emerald-tiled mezcal bar, serving some of the best margaritas in town.
Directly adjoining Casa Pastor, Plaza Pastor is a heated, covered terrace, featuring a statement blackened-steel central bar, which houses a smoking Mexican chicken rotisserie. In juxtaposition to the clean lines of the steel bar, beautiful oak banquet seating curves around the parameter of the space and is set against a backdrop of sub-tropical greenery and ambient lighting.
Making its home in a trio of brick archways, The Drop takes inspiration from the Coal Drops Victorian heritage. Set in a candle-lit, cellar-style space underground, the warm and inviting interior is relaxed and intimate, with terracotta flooring and original features from its previous incarnation as a stable. In the central arch is a communal table created from a magnificent piece of 180-year-old Cheshire oak on industrial cast-iron legs, with marble tables around the outside of the space. Outside there is a dedicated oyster cart to serve the al fresco tables.
