In the space of just nine months, Portview employees raised an impressive £32,444 by organising a series of charity raffles, prize giveaways, social gatherings, and adrenaline-packed events throughout 2018.

Portview selected MDUK as its charity partner to support fellow colleague, Shauna Wright, whose six-year-old son Jack is living with Duchenne – a form of muscle dystrophy that affects around 2,500 people in the UK and causes muscles to weaken over time, leading to severe disability. The condition affects not only muscles used for movement, but also the heart and vital breathing muscles too, cutting young lives short.

Speaking about the condition, Shauna Wright said:

“Hearing the words your son has a life limiting disease is soul destroying. As a family, we have learned to take one day at a time and accept that by the age of ten Jack will be wheelchair dependent.

“With no current cure for Duchenne, fundraising for research is vital and I am overwhelmed that my colleagues chose to support MDUK. The funds will cover over six months of pioneering research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which will hopefully contribute to finding the cure that we so desperately need.”

Managing Director of Portview Fit-Out, Simon Campbell added:

“I’m exceptionally proud of our team, and especially our charity committee led by Shauna Smyth, who have really pulled together to achieve this incredible sum of over £32,000 towards MDUK in a show of solidarity with Shauna Wright.

“It’s no secret that we often go over and above the expectations of others, but I think in this case we even managed to surprise ourselves at just how successful we have been. It’s all thanks to the hard work, generosity and passion of our team who have shown immense leadership in planning various events to raise funds for a cause that is close to our hearts.

“Our people and projects are what makes Portview unique and we’re incredibly lucky to have such a charitable workforce that are passionate about giving back to the local community.”

MDUK is a charity for people living with muscle-wasting conditions, which supports the development of effective treatments and provides services that enable individuals and their families to live as independently as possible.

“It’s been fantastic working with the team at Portview to raise over £32,000 for research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy.”

Julie Harvey, Muscular Dystrophy UK’s Regional Development Manager for Northern Ireland

“Many companies talk about community support and CSR, but it’s obvious that for the staff at Portview it’s not just ticking a box; they genuinely care about making a difference and went above and beyond to smash their original target and achieve such a fantastic total.

“This is an extremely exciting time for research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and with the fantastic support of companies like Portview, Muscular Dystrophy UK has been able to commit over £1.5 million in funding to support a new gene therapy trial in the UK.

“New treatments could give young children a real chance of leading a full life despite diagnosis. Every day counts and we are so grateful to everyone at Portview for their support.”
